I've had enough experience by now that I should run screaming when someone approaches me about an eCommerce project (BTW - is it ecommerce, e-commerce, eCommerce ... can I get a ruling on this?).
The past few months has seen a rise in the number of companies asking about an eCommerce solution for their website. It seems we've spent so much time researching and implementing solutions that I had enough thoughts on the subject for a series of blog posts.
I don't know how many posts I'll squeeze out of this experience, but hopefully they'll help you in your own search.
To date, we have either implemented, supported or evaluated the following eCommerce software packages:
We've come away with the following conclusion: they're all great and they're all awful. There isn't an option out there that will do everything we and our clients want it to. Either we have full control over the design and features are lacking, or it's chock full of features and you have to choose between a couple of bland templates. Each solution comes down to having a discussion with our clients: let's make a list - what do you need to have, and what's nice to have?
